Spiritual Conduct (Adab) & Moral Character by Dr. Sahibzada Uzair Mahmood Al-Azhari
(President: World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates – Pakistan Branch; Director: Ruknul Islam Jamia Mujaddidia)

When Allah Almighty commissioned Prophet Moses and Aaron to confront Pharaoh—the epitome of tyrannical arrogance—He commanded them: "And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]" (Surah Ta-Ha: 44). In this profoundly moving ethical talk, Dr. Uzair Mahmood Al-Azhari invites us to "Learn from Allah": if the Almighty instructs gentleness towards a tyrant who claimed divinity, how must we interact with our fellow human beings and misguided brethren?

The Fallacy of Aggressive Correction
Many religious individuals mistakenly believe that defending truth requires anger, biting sarcasm, and harsh confrontation. Dr. Uzair explains that while harshness may gratify the ego, it almost always repels the listener and hardens their resistance. The sun dissolves ice without force; similarly, authentic gentleness penetrates hardened hearts where anger fails.

Core Dimensions of Prophetic Forbearance (Hilm):

  • Differentiating Between the Sinner and the Sin: Hate the transgression, but maintain compassion for the human soul, praying sincerely for their guidance.
  • Mastery Over Anger: True strength is not physically subduing an opponent, but retaining composure when provoked, following the prophetic model at Ta'if and the Conquest of Makkah.
  • Winning Hearts Through Sublime Manners: Returning goodness in the face of malice turns bitter enemies into intimate friends, as promised in Surah Fussilat (41:34).
  • Reflecting the Divine Attribute of Al-Halim: The forbearance of Allah allows transgressors time to repent rather than striking them instantly.

Conclusion:
Islam did not conquer continents through ruthless force, but through sublime character, unwavering justice, and radiant gentleness. Let us banish toxicity and anger from our discourse and embody divine mercy in our daily dealings. May Allah soften our hearts and grant us prophetic grace. Ameen.
