The Delicate Balance Between Gentleness and Moral Courage
Dr. Uzair observed that often individuals, owing to their tender-heartedness, mild nature, and compassionate demeanor, hesitate to speak the truth. Sometimes they worry that a wealthy acquaintance might take offense, or that family ties and elite relations might become strained, or that a customary offering or patronage might cease, or that standing for the truth might bring hardship and tribulations.
The Inspiring Paradigm of Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Mahmood Alwari (RA)
Yet in the blessed life of his grandfather, Hazrat Khwaja Shah Mufti Muhammad Mahmood Alwari (RA), one witnesses boundless love and affection paired seamlessly with unyielding courage to proclaim the truth, denounce falsehood, and forbid what is unlawful.
Recounting an iconic incident, Dr. Uzair shared that when a disciple invited Hazrat to a meal, Hazrat inquired about the host's identity and profession. When the host answered that he was engaged in farming, Hazrat probed gently: "Speak the truth." The host admitted he was involved in usury and interest. With profound wisdom, Hazrat explained the severe prohibition of usury and recited the Qur'anic warning: "If you do not desist, then take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger." The spiritual impact of Hazrat’s gaze and heartfelt advice caused the man to immediately abandon usury and become a devout worshiper who arose for Tahajjud prayers.
Drawing a profound ethical principle for the disciples, Dr. Uzair explained that Hazrat could easily have partaken of the food in silence, prayed for the host, accepted an offering, and departed. Instead, he chose the path of speaking truth, imparting a timeless awareness so profound that attendees documented it for succeeding generations to distinguish between righteousness and falsehood.
Substantiating this principle with authentic traditions from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, Dr. Uzair cited the historic resolve of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (RA) against those who refused Zakat, demonstrating to Sayyiduna Umar (RA) and the entire Ummah that what the Holy Prophet ﷺ declared as truth remains truth, and what he declared false remains false until the Day of Judgment.
